Types of Electric Vehicle Charging
There are three levels of EV Charging; Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3. Level 3 is further divided into DC Fast Charging and Supercharging. The higher the level of charging, the faster the charging process, as more power is delivered to the vehicle. It’s important to note that different EV’s charge at different speeds on each Level, because each EV can accept different levels of power on the Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE).
- Level 1 charger cable comes with the vehicle, uses a 120V standard household alternating-current (AC) plug.
- Standard equipment on vehicles and therefore is portable and does not require the installation of charging equipment.
- A full charge of an electric car generally takes 8 to 12 hours to completely charge a fully depleted battery.
- The most common place for Level 1 charging is at the vehicle owner’s home and is typically conducted overnight.
- For both commercial (204 AC Plug) & residential (208 AC Plug) use.
- Requires additional charging equipment installation.
- Faster charging with level 2 chargers, generally takes 4 to 6 hours to completely charge a fully depleted battery.
- Commonly found in residential settings, public parking areas, places of employment and commercial settings.
- Installed at designated charging stations, high-powered battery charging through a 480V direct-current (DC) plug.
- Fastest charging, provides 80% charge in 20 minutes.
- Mostly deployed across expressways, filling stations and commercial settings.
- Capable of providing up to 350 km (217 mi) of range to an EV in 10 minutes or less.
- New edition of ‘Future proofed’ charging stations, features the ability to deliver between 150 to 920 volts DC and 350kW of charging power.
- Compatibility with a wide range of current and future electric vehicle models.
- Designed for use in commercial operations, allowing for integration with a range of payment platforms and their use by pay-to-charge providers.
Electric Vehicle Charging Station
Requirements & Standards in India
Government of India and the Department of energy laid down some rules for setting up a public charging station in India. Some of which are as follows:

- Statutory clearance from the local civic body.
- Proximity to a transformer.
- Minimum of three fast chargers and two slow charge points.
- Transformer with safety appliance.
- Electricity supply (33/l l KV line/cables) to power up the charging station.
- High quality of civil work.
- Network Service Providers (NSPs) to enable advanced remote/online booking of charging slots.
- Safe area for charging and public amenities.
- Liquid-cooled cables and climate control equipment if fast charging option is planned by the charging station provider.
